Texas blues guitarist James Henry has been called “Houston's best kept secret” for years!
Henry, 38, has spent more than half of his life hiding behind his long hair while making other people's music sound electric.
He's played guitar with local blues great Steve Krase for the past 10 years, which means he also does duty with the wondrous singer Trudy Lynn. Henry also was a member of the band Shadowcasters for nearly two decades. But only now, after hundreds of gigs with bands or as a sideman, has Henry stepped out with an album on his own.
The record is only five songs long, but all five are incendiary blues-rock half marathons and marathons, ranging from four to 10 minutes. It's a thrilling throwback for any enthusiast of old-school, guitar-driven rock trio albums.
"Live Album" also was something of an accident. In February, Henry's band - Thurman Robinson on bass and Mike Morrison drums - was playing a daylong festival at the Last Concert Cafe, near north downtown Houston.
